Exact proof status¶
Package theorem for the high-degree regime¶
The package now contains the declaration:
Its full mathematical scope is:
[Fintype V] [DecidableEq V]
G : SimpleGraph V
[DecidableRel G.Adj]
Fintype.card V <= 2 * G.maxDegree
------------------------------------------------------------
exists assignment : Assignment G
(ExtensionPalette (G.maxDegree + 1)),
assignment.Valid
Since ExtensionPalette D is Fin (D + 2), the conclusion uses the palette
Fin (G.maxDegree + 3). The theorem covers empty and nonempty finite vertex
types and has no parity hypothesis.
Plain-language reading
Every finite graph satisfying the displayed order/maximum-degree inequality has a kernel-checked valid total assignment in the displayed palette.
This is a theorem of the Lean package. It is not, by itself, a statement that the manuscript has locked or proved a corresponding paper theorem, and it makes no novelty claim.
The theorem is propositional: it proves that an assignment exists. It is not an executable routine for extracting a coloring from an external graph file.
Conditional independent-seed endpoint on main¶
Current main commit da0595da1fa93c51a00be78193071bdea74aeb02,
tree 34824cd54afb9a244a3fb58608a8d4da9bd6cfa6, contains the separate
supplied-witness declaration. Its historical proof source is branch
agent/independent-seed-endpoint at exact source commit
cc4dd7ae1d858ea0583549f88707952e2414bf60, tree
9af6a84e1305aed9a0156dcd59c279de792dea4a:
Its exact mathematical boundary, in addition to finite/decidable graph structure, is:
0 < q
phi : EdgeAssignment G (Fin q)
phi.Valid
A : Finset V
G.IsIndepSet (A : Set V)
cert : IndependentSeedPeelCertificate G A q
------------------------------------------------------------
exists assignment : Assignment G (Fin (q + 1)), assignment.Valid
The certificate stores a duplicate-free deletion order covering exactly the
vertices outside A. At the step for v, the number of its neighbors later
in the order is strictly less than q - G.degree v. The checked proof colors
in reverse order. The existing missing-color count leaves more eligible old
colors at v than the already colored later neighbors can forbid. All seed
vertices receive the single fresh color; their independence gives
vertex-vertex validity inside the seed.
For q = G.maxDegree + 1, the palette is
Fin (G.maxDegree + 2), so this theorem gives a conditional Delta + 2
implication. Its hypotheses are not discharged by the declaration: the
library does not prove Vizing's theorem or otherwise construct the supplied
proper (Delta + 1)-edge coloring, and it does not prove that every graph has
the required independent seed and peel certificate. Consequently this is not
an unrestricted Total Coloring Conjecture theorem and it does not change the
scope or Delta + 3 palette of the package's high-degree terminal theorem.
The direct specialization
takes the explicit inputs
phi : EdgeAssignment G (Fin (G.maxDegree + 1))
phi.Valid
A : Finset V
G.IsIndepSet (A : Set V)
cert : IndependentSeedPeelCertificate G A (G.maxDegree + 1)
and concludes a valid Assignment G (Fin (G.maxDegree + 2)). This wrapper
only substitutes q = G.maxDegree + 1 in the generic theorem. It does not
construct any of the displayed witnesses.

These are trust receipts for the conditional declarations at source commit
cc4dd7ae…; they do not construct or verify the endpoint's supplied
mathematical witnesses for an arbitrary graph.
Total-independent selector decoder on main¶
Current main contains this layer. Historical proof branch
agent/total-independent-selector-decoder extended the preceding endpoint at
source commit d008514c7a1cf834007bf0bd8de0d10a93926711,
exact tree 1847934c78da03fe80bb67236868700c79016129. Its general public
declaration is:
Beyond finite/decidable graph structure, its complete supplied-input boundary is:
phi : EdgeAssignment G (Fin q)
phi.Valid
S : Finset V
G.IsIndepSet (S : Set V)
F : Finset G.edgeSet
EdgeFinsetIsMatching F
EdgeFinsetAvoids F S
K : Finset V
g0 : V -> Fin q
SelectorOldColoringGoodOn G phi S F K g0
cert : SelectorCorePeelCertificate G S K q
------------------------------------------------------------
exists assignment : Assignment G (Fin (q + 1)), assignment.Valid
The decoder assigns the fresh color to every vertex in S and every edge in
F. Independence, matching, and avoidance handle conflicts among those
fresh-color objects. On K \ S, g0 is an actual-list coloring: each vertex
color avoids incident edges not moved to the fresh color, and adjacent
old-colored vertices have different colors. The peel certificate records
S ⊆ K, a duplicate-free order covering exactly the complement of K, and
the core-relative inequality
at each step. Lean checks the reverse greedy extension and the final total assignment.
The direct specialization
sets q = G.maxDegree + 1 and concludes a valid assignment in
Fin (G.maxDegree + 2). It does not construct the proper edge coloring,
S, F, the core coloring, or the peel certificate.
Explicit alternating rainbow-path wrapper¶
The same module defines
TotalColoring.AlternatingRainbowPathSelectorCertificate. It stores indexed
path vertices and edges, injective vertices, exact consecutive endpoints,
core spanning, pairwise-distinct path-edge colors, a globally unused old
spare color, alternating old-lift and fresh-edge families, both matching
proofs, avoidance of the start vertex by fresh edges, the successor core
colors, and the core-relative peel certificate.
From that explicit certificate,
checks the donor exchange: alternating edges moved to the unused old spare or
to the fresh total color free their original colors for successor vertices.
Rainbow distinctness makes those supplied core colors proper. The theorem then
invokes the general selector decoder. Its maximum-degree wrapper concludes
Fin (G.maxDegree + 2).
Remaining existence seams
Neither path wrapper proves Vizing's theorem, constructs a proper
(Delta + 1) edge coloring, selects a suitable total-independent set or
canonical core, proves the core coloring and peel inequalities, or proves
existence of the alternating rainbow path. All of those facts remain
fields or arguments of the checked declarations. These are conditional
decoder theorems, not the unrestricted Total Coloring Conjecture.
Exact selector proof-source trust receipt¶
Sealed Easley job 5391803 rebuilt and audited the exact source tree on
node411. It completed 0:0 in 16m09s with peak RSS 125399676K. The source
archive SHA-256 was
9ba0103e358cd761c6e591cfa00b13352236ff2b1774df1fd2f75cba8215561c;
the module SHA-256 was
21c0c665d1a29369295c38db8af99f4fe54b24478e9cc079e6fe8fdc26eed4d7;
and the outgoing cache SHA-256 was
1b398677c310ff2db0c9a1afa9a3e65f77691bd92123914dfa17a2387635e4bc.
The gate covered exact-tree reconstruction, strict leaf compilation,
target/umbrella/full builds, Quickstart, axiom inspection, leanchecker,
JSON/diff checks, and cache archiving. This receipt establishes correctness of
the formal implications at the named tree, not existence of their inputs.
Distribution and provenance
PR #11 merged the selector declarations into main as commit
35e127c1…. Current main commit da0595da…, tree 34824cd5…, contains
them. Source commit d008514… and tree 1847934c… remain their historical
proof provenance and sealed-receipt target.
Partial-edge selector decoder and exact reverse normalization on main¶
Current main contains this layer. Historical branch
agent/partial-edge-selector-normalization was stacked on the preceding
selector branch. Its source commit is
c3dbe69c15f96e3c71d8481ae4e517ee2f4fdbf2, with exact source tree
11007a4aa381984a8d66aa1db297312cebe8d8b5. The new forward declaration
uses an arbitrary chosen fresh color. Its old edge assignment need only satisfy
phi.ValidOutside F: adjacent edges outside F have distinct colors, while
the stored values on F are unrestricted and discarded. The remaining
hypotheses are exactly that S is independent, F is a matching avoiding
S, old vertex colors outside S avoid incident edges outside F, and those
old-colored vertices are properly colored. The theorem sends S and F to
the fresh color and embeds every retained old color through
fresh.succAbove. The corollary
totalIndependentSelectorAssignment_valid_of_validOutside applies the same
result to the earlier last-color decoder.
The structure
TotalColoring.PartialEdgeSelectorNormalization records the precise converse
bookkeeping. For a supplied valid a : Assignment G (Fin (q + 1)), a chosen
fresh palette color, and a fallback old color,
partialEdgeSelectorNormalization_of_valid defines S and F to be the
fresh vertex and edge color classes, pulls the other colors back through
fresh.succAbove, proves every forward hypothesis, and stores the literal
equality
The maximum-degree notation wrapper starts from a supplied valid assignment in
Fin (G.maxDegree + 2). It does not produce that assignment. Thus the reverse
normalization is an exact decomposition of an existing coloring, not an
existence theorem, a proof of Vizing's theorem, or an unrestricted
Delta + 2 result.
Distribution and provenance
PR #12 merged these declarations into main as commit 61e79bea…, exact
tree cb2d7d06…. Source commit c3dbe69c… and tree 11007a4a… remain the
historical layer provenance. No final Easley receipt is asserted for that
historical source tree inside this document; exact-tree trust receipts
are external evidence and must name the tree they certify.
Adapted-spare vertex endpoint on main¶
Current main commit da0595da1fa93c51a00be78193071bdea74aeb02, tree
34824cd54afb9a244a3fb58608a8d4da9bd6cfa6, contains the declaration below.
Its historical proof source is branch agent/donor-global-formalization at
commit a7ed2453ca044d37583240a9b47729c9c4d5a940; PR #13 merged it into
main as commit dc6e3a4b… on 2026-07-20:
For supplied A B : Finset V, missing head : V -> C, and
hAB : Disjoint A B, adaptedSpareVertexColor A B missing head assigns the
fresh color none to vertices in A, assigns some (head v) to vertices in
B, and assigns some (missing v) elsewhere. The theorem proves the exact
equivalence
the endpoint assignment is proper on every edge of K
if and only if
A is independent in K
and every adjacent equal-missing pair meets A union B
and each head label differs from every unchanged-neighbor missing color
and the head labels properly color adjacent vertices of B.
The disjointness premise is explicit. Membership in A has priority in the
definition, but the theorem models the intended endpoint only under
Disjoint A B.
Exact endpoint boundary
This declaration is the vertex-side properness interface only. It does
not construct A or B, a physical donor matching, donor-label
transport, compatible seed or matching data, the missing or head
functions, a proper edge coloring, or a total coloring. It is neither an
unrestricted Delta + 2 theorem nor a proof of the Total Coloring
Conjecture. Any verification claim must cite a tree-specific external
receipt.
Checked end-to-end route¶
1. A matching lower bound¶
TotalColoring.MatchingLowerBound.exists_matchingGraph_edgeFinset_card_ge
proves the reusable finite-graph fact
(forall v, k <= H.degree v) -> 2 * k <= Fintype.card V
-> exists a matching subgraph of H with at least k edges.
The proof chooses a maximum-cardinality matching and uses the absence of a one-edge augmentation and of a length-three augmenting path to obtain the degree-sum contradiction.
For a nonempty target graph G, set
The complement-degree identity and the high-degree hypothesis give the two inputs required by the matching theorem. This specialization is
in HighDegreeComplementMatching.
2. Exact-size extraction¶
IsMatchingGraph.exists_subgraph_edgeFinset_card_eq trims a supplied
matching to any smaller prescribed number of edges. The composed declaration
therefore returns a matching in G's complement with exactly
edges.
3. Pair/singleton witness and auxiliary class¶
PairSingletonWitness.ofComplementMatching turns that matching into a fixed
partition relation: matching edges are pair classes and uncovered vertices
are singleton classes. The checked counting lemmas give exactly
The declaration
packages this construction. The existing PairSingletonWitness interface
then constructs the ordinary auxiliary graph on Option V, supplies the
conflict-preserving decoder, proves selector membership and exact coverage,
and establishes the matching-plus-full-star structural predicate
InAuxiliaryClass (G.maxDegree + 1).
4. Auxiliary coloring and decoding¶
The all-orders auxiliary theorem
proves a proper Fin (D + 2) auxiliary edge coloring that is rainbow on the
distinguished edges of every finite InAuxiliaryClass D H J. Its proof route
runs through minimal noncolorable extraction, a valid one-hole critical state,
fan and missing-color capacity, global pivots, dominators, crossing, and the
final contradiction.
Auxiliary.Extension.exists_valid_decode_of_inAuxiliaryClass composes that
theorem with the semantic decoder. The nonempty high-degree composition is:
5. Empty vertex type¶
TotalColoring.exists_valid_assignment_of_isEmpty proves that a graph on an
empty vertex type has a vacuously valid assignment for every color type. The
terminal theorem splits on isEmpty_or_nonempty V, applies this base case in
the empty branch, and applies the complement-matching route in the nonempty
branch.
Retained supplied-input interfaces¶
The end-to-end theorem does not remove the lower-level APIs. They remain useful when a downstream proof already has more structured input:
- a supplied compatible
Auxiliary.Extensionplus selector membership andInAuxiliaryClass D H Jcan useExtension.exists_valid_decode_of_inAuxiliaryClass; - a supplied
PairSingletonWitnesscan use its concrete auxiliary graph, extension, structural, and numerical lemmas directly; and - a supplied
EquitableIndependentPartition G (G.maxDegree + 1)on a nonempty graph can use the theorem below when it also hasFintype.card V <= 2 * G.maxDegree:EquitableIndependentPartition.exists_valid_assignment_of_highDegreePartition; and - on current
main(historical proof sourcecc4dd7ae…), a supplied properphi : EdgeAssignment G (Fin q), independent seedA, andIndependentSeedPeelCertificate G A q, together with0 < q, can useTotalColoring.exists_valid_assignment_of_independentSeedPeel; this API is present on currentmaincommitda0595da…, tree34824cd5….
The equitable-partition theorem remains a valid conditional interface. It is
no longer a missing premise of
TotalColoring.exists_valid_assignment_of_highDegree: the terminal theorem
uses the checked complement-matching construction instead.
This is a conditional transfer theorem. It neither constructs the extension
from an arbitrary graph nor proves a relation between D and the original
graph's maximum degree.
Tier-(a) constructor arithmetic seams¶
The library now also contains finite-arithmetic support for the open concrete constructor seam. (The pair/singleton witness and equitable-partition count formulas are documented in the sections above; this section records the Hall-rectangle addition.)
TotalColoring.HallRectanglesproves the exact Cartesian blocker-box cover∏ i C_i = ⋃ b, ∏ i (C_i ∩ N(b,i))from a pointwise cover hypothesis, plus the resulting finite product bound and its4^ngeometric-mean corollary.
These modules are not the end-to-end constructor. They do not close:
- the Total Coloring Conjecture;
- the identification
D = Δ(G) + 1for an original graph; - construction of a concrete
Auxiliary.Extensionfrom an arbitrary graph; - proof of
InAuxiliaryClassfor the concrete split-star witness; - existence of the equitable partition input; or
- any end-to-end high-degree total-coloring conclusion.
Structural auxiliary hypothesis¶
InAuxiliaryClass D H J existentially supplies a center x and an off-center
matching M. Its fields require, among other things:
Jis exactlyMtogether with the full star atx;Mis a matching, lies offx, and avoids neighbors ofx;- every vertex other than
xis incident with exactly one member ofJ; J.card = Dand the ambient maximum degree is at mostD; and- the center degree lies between
2andD.
This structural predicate remains the boundary of the reusable all-orders auxiliary theorem, even though the high-degree wrapper now constructs its own witness.
What the checked package theorem does not establish¶
The checked declarations do not establish:
- the Total Coloring Conjecture;
- an unconditional
G.maxDegree + 2total-coloring conclusion; - an unconditional theorem from graph hypotheses alone for graphs outside the displayed high-degree regime;
- Vizing's theorem or universal existence of the proper edge-coloring witness required by the independent-seed endpoint;
- universal existence of an independent seed and peel certificate satisfying that endpoint;
- universal existence of the selector matching, actual-list core coloring, core-relative peel certificate, or alternating rainbow-path certificate required by the total-independent selector wrappers;
- construction of the adapted-spare sets, a physical donor matching, compatible seed or matching data, missing/head labels, or a proper edge coloring needed before the adapted-spare vertex endpoint can apply;
- a locked or fully proved theorem in the separate research manuscript;
- novelty of the package theorem or of any proposed manuscript result;
- an executable coloring extractor for arbitrary external graph data; or
- publication trust for a later Git integration tree merely because its proof source descends from the checked development tree.
Palette warning
The checked terminal palette is
ExtensionPalette (G.maxDegree + 1), definitionally
Fin (G.maxDegree + 3). Do not shorten this terminal theorem to a stronger
palette. The separate Fin (q + 1) independent-seed and
total-independent selector theorems are conditional on their displayed
proper edge coloring and certificate inputs; they do not alter this
terminal palette. Do not identify any package result with a manuscript
claim without the manuscript's independent theorem and novelty gates.
